Slutwalks, sex work, and the future of feminism

If this is the future of feminism I am afraid. This is not intended to slight Jessica Valenti’s recent article in The Washington Post and this is not to say that  Valenti isn’t right about the power of grassroots organizing and the way in which it can be incredibly inspiring to watch young women get together and fight for their lives. Protest is good. Conversations are good. And MAN has all this Slutwalk stuff started a conversation. So it’s not so much that I think the protest is bad, or that all these conversations have been bad. This many people talking about feminism? Pretty neat. What scares me is where that conversation has headed. What scares me is this image, taken from Slutwalk Las Vegas’ Facebook page: While, as...

Conscious Men Issue Fauxpology, Creep Us All Out.

**Trigger warning on account of my potty mouth. Dear ‘Man’ (because I can speak to ALL MEN just like that!), Um, what??? This is just about the creepiest apology I have ever heard. Though it reminds me, in an uber-triggering kind-of-way, of men in my past who have desperately wanted to pretend to be my ally by telling me over and over again how magical and mystical and miraculous women are and then talking over me when I try to explain that that ain’t it. Ok menz (and let me clarify, this video, in no way, speaks for all men, but rather for Gay Hendricks and Arjuna Ardagh . In fact, I believe that most...

The F Word? Haven't heard of it. We assumed Noami Wolf was taking care of all that.

So according to the outside world (feminists live inside a stormy bubble filled with hornets and smoldering bras), feminism is either TAKING OVER THE WOOOOORLD WITH IT’S RADICAL AGENDA HIDEYOURPROTONZZZZZZ or, according to the CBC, totally boring, unhip, and overrun with rich white ladies. Now, I am as titillated as the as the next feminist to hear the word even acknowledged by mainstream media and when I heard there was going to be a WHOLE MOVIE about my one true love, I was more than pleased. Alas, the film did not do us justice. Nor did it really ‘do’ much of anything aside from remind us that EVERYTHING STILL SUCKS. And NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Except Naomi Wolf. Last night, the CBC aired The “F” Word:...

Science, meet feminism. Feminism, science. Talk amongst yourselves.

So I’m getting really sick of hearing sexologists tell women, over and over again, that they should be ‘ok’ with their male partners watching porn. You know what? If you are ok with your partner watching porn then that is ‘ok’. If you are not ‘ok’ then it is no one’s job to tell you that you should learn ‘how to accept your boyfriend’s interest in pornography‘. Particularly not when you sell yourself as some kind of professional expert on sex and sex in relationships. I suppose it is too much to ask that those working in psychology/science-type fields have any knowledge or interest in feminist theory but GOSH would it ever be nice! If you google (not to suggest that googling anything is the best way to accumulate...

Where have all the feminists gone? or Why women's studies is making me depressed.

Hello! To those who don’t read my bio religiously, I have begun a graduate degree in the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies. And amongst the wonder and glory I experience during every moment in which I am not panicking and punching my ego in the gut every for NOT EVER being smart enough/hard working enough/organized enough/awake enough, lies a deep frustration and sadness that has grown ever-stronger over the course of the term. WHY THE HELL DOESN’T ANYONE CALL THEMSELVES FEMINIST ANYMORE?! “Hey peeps!” I want to say, “we’re in a FEMINIST THEORY class! If there were anywhere where it might be appropriate/acceptable/normal to label yourself ‘feminist’, it would be here”. But no. Instead what I hear is: “Well, I’ve never identified as feminist” and then tiny...

Sam Reynolds is a douchebag

Above mentioned statement is probably not news to anyone who goes to SFU and/or reads the weakest of all weak-ass college/university papers, The Peak, which elects to publish such gems as this, this, this and this; i.e. Le garbage (P.S. Don’t actually read any of those articles as they will kill your brain, dead). And whatevs, it’s a student paper, so it’s for learning, and clearly these folks are all just starting along on their paths to becoming really, really great journalists who report on really, really great stories. So while we can’t take it too seriously, this post, recently published by Sam Reynolds, who is, I don’t know, 12 years old and angry that none of the Grade 7 girls will hold hands with him, deserves some attention,...

Lisa Kirchner: Dumbest blogger ever

What the hell kind of dumb-ass writers do they have over there at Bust Magazine? While I am generally irritated by Bust’s inability to say anything truly controversial, which tells me that they are hardly willing to stand up for feminism for fear that they might lose their I’m-not-a-feminist-but audience, I am usually not completely offended by their articles. This has been an exception. And, as far as I’m concerned, because I have the maturity of an 11 year old, if a person titles their article “_____: Dumbest______Ever”, they are inviting the public to criticize their writing in an equally ignorant and thoughtless way. And therefore I declare Lisa Kirchner to be the suckiest of all sucky bloggers. Lisa Kirchner: You suck. No returns. Ms Kirchner posted an article...

In which I criticize most things.

Amanda Hess quoted an interview with Dita Von Teese in which she is asked whether or not she is a feminist. Her answer was far from surprising, and yet, as always, I am disappointed. Are all celebrities total idiots? Like, is there any particular reason why 99% (p.s. that stat is total science) of female celebrities either have no idea at all what the word even means (a la Gwen Stefani, who apparently has been waiting patiently her whole life for someone to just PLEASE give her a definition of the word. Because. she. doesn’t. have. access. to. the. internet? Or, like, books? Or, um, conversations? With other people?) or are scared shitless to be associated with something as horrifying as freedom. Von Teese, who kind of contradicts herself...
