Misogyny and porn culture are SO FUCKING IRONIC, say hipsters. Also, fuck hipsters

Though I occasionally find a good article in Vice, mostly I just find really terrible writing and misogyny/efforts at popularizing pornography. I mean, I like reading about drugs as much as the next person, but I just can’t stomach the constant objectification and glorification of porn (because I’m too fucking uptight or stupid to ‘get’ how objectification is actually artsy and ok if hipsters are doing it). The magazine has really nailed the whole ‘irony masks racism and sexism‘ thing. It’s also spawned a whole faction of idiot hipsters who think that their writing is deep because it makes no sense. It’s the emperor has no clothes redux. NOBODY SAY ANYTHING JUST SMILE AND NOD AND PAT YOUR BUDDIES ON THE BACK BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALL THE RIGHT HIPSTER...

I’m a terrible feminist. Oh well

Roxanne Gay has an essay in the Fall issue of The Virginia Quarterly Review about being a bad feminist. Well, aren’t we all? In the essay, she confesses to loving Vogue, the colour pink, and to shaving her legs. She says she is failing as a feminist and points to what she calls “essential feminism” as a cause for her discomfort and shame: The most significant problem with essential feminism is how it doesn’t allow for the complexities of human experience or individuality. There seems to be little room for multiple or discordant points of view. Essential feminism has, for example, led to the rise of the phrase “sex-positive feminism,” which creates a clear distinction between feminists who are positive about sex and feminists who aren’t—and that in turn...

The new face of feminism is boobs

I’m sorry but I am so freakin done with Femen. I mean, to be real, I was done with Femen the moment Femen’s boobs were plastered all over the media by horny young Occupy enthusiasts, but this quote really solidified the fact that these ladies are little more than a clueless distraction: “We’re the new face of feminism,” Shevchenko said. “Classical feminism is dead. I think French feminism needs our new feminism.” Look. I KNOWWW y’all are excited about whatever you think feminism is. I know you are stoked on all the attention you’re getting. I believe that you care about women’s empowerment (whatever that is) and the causes you are fighting for. But, seriously.  What the fuck is this? Diversity of tactics, ok. But “classical feminism is dead”...

Podcast: Can marriage ever be feminist? An interview with Nicola Barker

Though many of the more oppressive aspects of marriage have been removed, the institution itself continues to represent and reinforce a patriarchal and heteronormative ideology in many ways. Marriage seems barely relevant in this day and age and yet we continue to marry. In fact, one of the key struggles towards gender equality appears to be the fight for same-sex marriage. But can marriage ever be progressive? Is this an institution worth fighting for? Your host, Meghan Murphy, speaks with Nicola Barker, the author of the book: Not the Marrying Kind: A Feminist Critique of Same-Sex Marriage. Listen here:   Podcast: Play in new window | Download...

Facials, feminism, & performance: On f**king men in a patriarchy

As feminists, sleeping with men is always going to be a little fraught. Not getting to the actual act, per se – jumping into bed with people we feel like jumping into bed with can be pretty straightforward – rather the politics surrounding feminists having sex with men within the context of a patriarchy as well as, of course, the maintenance of a sexual relationship with a man in the long-term. Applying the phrase, ‘the personal is political’, seems particularly difficult when we are talking about an act that can be very private and very personal. Certainly sex is one of those things that can make us feel extremely vulnerable. Including politics or even acknowledging that, in one way or another, there is a larger context to our behaviour...
